Martin B. Anderson has come leaping back to life in the form of class pictures that have been making the rounds. Feel free to invite former #1 Schoolers from the 50s-60s to visit this blog and comment. Also feel free to exchange contact info with long lost friends. Anyone with pictures of other 50s-60s classes please send them to Ezra. Other memories? Sgt. Moynihan? Ken & Birdie Button? Tay House Carnival? White Elephant Sales? Mrs. Lintz' kindergarten circus? And just who WAS Martin B?

The photo from the class of 1961 is as closes as I can get to when I was at Hillside #1. I was there from kindergarten through the end of fourth grade and then we moved to Brighton. I was in the class behind this one but knew Wendy Schulman. Does anyone remember: Big Camp (the largest tree in the "woods"), the Blue Devils (a competitor gang), the people from across the bridge (which used to go over the subway) used a Red and white store called Colby's for their treats and we used the Brighton Food Market from our side for fireballs, jaw breakers, popcicles, waxed lips, etc. and aqua, sugar covered bubble gum balls called Sputniks! Or...what does the smell of fresh sawdust conjure up? The Tay House Carnival of course! We NEVER got snow days; they were way too efficient except for one doozer when I was in the third grade and we got sent home early. The gym teacher ( an ancient Mrs. Johnson) saw me scrambling up a snow bank and reported me to the principal, Mrs. Doyle who may have been a Nazi trained general for all I knew or felt! There was Mrs. Romak in the big K, Mrs. Rhinehold in first grade who taught us Bob and Nancy, Mac and Muff, Miss Elliot in the second grade who let us play with clay, Mrs. Law who actually gave us WORK, and Mrs. Hoteling, who retired when I moved away. What a cool school and walking home for lunch was the best!
